About Angel Dean
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Angel Dean received her BFA from the University of Georgia and her MFA from Cornell University. She spent 15 years in New York City performing and recording for Rounder Records and Diesel Only Records. Angel has written, recorded, and released dozens of songs with her husband, horror writer Jonathan Thomas. In 1994 she moved to Providence and began to channel her creative energy into the visual domains of encaustics, printmaking, collage, and mixed media. Locals also know her as an avid gardener and dog lover. Recently retired, she was a 25-year fixture of the Providence Art Club staff.
Angel is an artist who mainly works with encaustic and cold wax media. Her work is personal and unconventional. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Dean makes work that is the by-product of the life she’s living.
Angel is an active member of New England Wax, a professional organization founded in 2006, dedicated to promoting excellence in fine art made with encaustic and cold wax mediums, and to raising awareness of the wax mediums for artistic expression. Angel was president of New England Wax 2019-20.
