About Roberta Wexler Ehrlich
When I create art, I am in a dialogue with the present - minute to minute. I don't plan pieces very far in advance. I make a preliminary sketch and from it I identify the forms that interest me. Then I start. I do most of my painting at home on the dining room table. I usually work in silence.
In the last few years, my primary medium has shifted from printmaking to watercolor gouache. I used to find traditional paints too limiting, but the malleable nature of gouache allows me to work in layers, to emphasize transparencies, and to amplify colors.
I gravitate toward the small intimacies that highlight everyday life. Sometimes the things that grab me are primal, sometimes they are social, and other times they are urbane. Common subjects include trees, small houses, natural landscapes, household objects, and my family.
