Etched In Stone

While teaching a painting class some years ago, a visiting former instructor and mentor said, as she left the class, “To all of your questions the answer is YES.” This was her response to the question of whether an art activity can be credible, reliable or possible. Making art is a series of decisions, or accidents, that lead us to the finished piece.

The monotype was chosen because of the happy accidents that add uniqueness to each print. I applied oil-based etching ink to a Plexiglas plate and used the pressure of the printing press to transfer the image to a dampened piece of paper. This was repeated twenty-eight plus times. Addressing the theme of “Hot Type,” I painted some rocks etched with the word YES. This is a way the visual artist can validate their efforts in making decisions about color, shape, form, medium, etc.
