About David Witbeck

David Witbeck studied Graphic Arts at Pratt Institute from 1965 to 1968. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology briefly and then spent six years as a photographer for a couple commercial studios. After another six years driving trucks he returned to school at RISD graduating in 1982 with a BFA in photography. He then freelanced for twenty-five years doing editorial, commercial and corporate work. Around 2000 Witbeck started painting again after not having done so for over thirty years. In 2007 he decided to focus exclusively on his artwork. He is represented by several galleries from Maine to Virginia and his work is in hundreds of private collections worldwide.

My work is all completely invented from memories, experiences and imagination. Rather than faithfully painting how people, places and things look, I paint how they “feel” by playing with shape, color and composition. I feel most successful when people tell me that my work makes them smile.
