About Karen L. Murtha
A Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) graduate and artist member of the Providence Art Club, Karen is primarily a figurative painter. She is currently working towards proficiency in the medium of photopolymer plate printmaking.
Inspired, when young, by beautiful paintings in my grandmother’s home, I began to paint. I’m fascinated with the little vignettes of people, their movements, gestures and relationship to one another. Within those interactions and their surroundings, a unique story is conveyed.
As an artist I’ve completed commissioned oil paintings, portraits, and murals. I’ve created signage and decor for both personal and commercial enterprises and for the facilitation of fund-raising events. Past collaboration with retail stores afforded me the opportunity to draw and publish high fashion illustrations for advertisements. Also, working with paper product companies, I designed and produced many greeting cards. I enjoy working and teaching using digital imagery, specializing in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign applications of the Adobe Creative Suite.
I’m privileged to have exhibited at the Providence Art Club, Coastal Contemporary Gallery, Newport Art Museum, The Coastal Living Gallery, the Gilbert Stuart Museum, and the Edward Everett Hale House.
